Congratulations on your purchase of a Maxwell Freedom windlass. Please engine to drive the boat up to the anchor.

After ignoring my windlass for almost 7 years - it has always worked great - it is now DOA this afternoon. I have the Horizon 600 (horizontal) on my 2001 265 Express. It is locked up tight and doesn't do anything or make any sound when I flip the helm switch. I checked the breaker and it looks fine. After doing some online research tonight, I found that my normal storage routine - running it up tight and leaving it that way is probably not the best way to leave it. I tried backing off the clutch nut but it didn't do anything.

Didn't really have a chance to debug and see for example if I was getting 12 volts to the motor. Didn't bang it with a hammer yet either. Regardless, the chain is pulled very tight and the whole thing is jammed. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but have never worked on a windlass before. Would like to basically remove and refurbish if possible.

Not really interested in a $900 replacement either. I hardly use the thing, so service history is pretty light. Is it worth digging in to it?

How do I get it unstuck? When you loosened the clutch, did you back that nut 90* CCW? Do you have the emergency ratchet lever with the 3 prongs to see if you could manually move the clutch cone with clutch nut backed? The manual says, note the gear train will not allow the anchor line/chain to slip so that may not work but it doesn't mention trying it with the nut backed. You said the fuses (breaker?) were OK, that indicates an effective open circuit somewhere rather than a short circuit. So I'd see if there is power to the fuse, switch, relay/solenoid, and motor to see where it stops (when switch is on for the last ones.) Voltage may display on a test meter but corrosion may prevent the motor or relay from operating( draws 45 A at recovery load). Needs clean connections.

Is this a 1 switch or 2station/switch setup? In some cases there may be more than one fuse or breaker location. Heaven benchmark advanced scope. And yes, If I couldn't release chain tension using leverage to pull chain out, I'd do it with bolt cutters or cutoff disc on shackle or last chain link. If you get it going, add a chain-stop or tensioner even if only a hook and line to a cleat, and leave slack at the windlass. Wiring diagrams and exploded parts diagram.
