Jul 6, 2018 - Swiss-made Thommen pocket altimeter/barometers have long been. A used Thommen Classic Altimeter (27000 Ft) with no instruction manual. Cullen 7 edicion septima espanol cengage learning 7. For these, the revolutions of the needle must be factored to get the total elevation. For instance, an analog altimeter that reads up to 3,000 feet but has three revolutions indicates an altitude of 9,000 feet plus any additional footage indicated by the needle itself.
Thommen TX-16 Back in 2000 a small local outdoor store called Grand West Outfitters was going out of business. I thought it was the best outdoor store in town and was sorry to see it go, however, during the “going out of business” sales I bought a variety of equipment, at deeply discounted prices, which I still use today. One of the items I bought which I don’t use much anymore was a Thommen Classic altimeter. The Thommen Classic Altimeter Plus Barometer is an aneroid type. If you’ve ever traveled from a low elevation to a higher elevation with something sealed, for example a bag of potato chips, you may have noticed that the bag expanded by quite a bit and sometimes looks like it is ready to burst! It does this because barometric pressure changes with elevation and the pressure decreases as elevation increases.
The barometric pressure change can be correlated to elevation change, therefore a barometer with a face showing feet or meters becomes an altimeter. In fact, most altimeters I’ve seen also have inHg (inches of mercury), or mbar (millibar) markings for measuring barometric pressure. Thommen TX-16 has a 15,000 foot range My Thommen Classic is a TX-16 model, which has a range to 15,000 feet and good enough for any mountain in Colorado. As far as analog instruments go, it’s easy to read, and as you might expect, doesn’t use a power source so, I never needed to worry about batteries going dead.
Asuka kenzan pc richards. You continually buy and eat ramen, even if you don’t like it that much. You cosplay daily. You begin to think that blue or pink is a natural hair color. You suddenly decide to study a random martial art.

On the face it says 19 jewels and without taking it apart it’s difficult for me to imagine where they would be, but suffice it to say that a jeweled movement would lead me to believe that this altimeter will be working accurately for many decades. Garmin GPS (Left), Thommen Altimeter (Center), Kestrel 4000 (Right) When I bought the Thommen I was really getting into backpacking with my sons and I always liked carrying my altimeter with me on our backpacking trips. It was particularly useful when wanting to find my location on a map to determine how far I was from our camping location in the mountains. I used it regularly until I bought a Kestrel 4000 Pocket Weather Tracker. In addition to its temperature measurement capability, anemometer for measuring wind speed and its ability to log measurements automatically, it also has a barometer and altimeter. I still use this today, especially when kayaking, but not as much as I once did, because for hiking it was replaced by a GPS. Using the Thommen Classic altimeter is pretty easy and similar to the Kestrel, but unlike a GPS, you need to periodically set the altitude based on the current location.
Since the aneroid altimeter is based on barometric pressure, if you travel a far distance, for example, a 2-4 hour car ride to your trailhead, the pressure may be different in that area than it was when you left home, even if you are at the same elevation. Also, let’s say you hiked up to Macey Lakes with beautiful weather and you checked the elevation before you went to bed that night. Then in the morning you woke up to a thunder storm because a weather front moved through, the barometric pressure is likely to have changed. Even though you may not have moved more than 10 feet from where you were last night your altimeter will now show something different than the night before. Once again, you will want to reset your elevation to the known value.
Here is the original booklet I received with my Thommen Altimeter: If you don’t find the manual very readable, but need to see a particular page, let me know and I’ll see if I can make a better copy. The handheld GPS was available at the time I bought the Thommen altimeter but I didn’t care for the price versus usability (user interface, battery life, etc.). Since then the GPS has become very user friendly and is so small that it is available in wrist watches. They are pretty nice and don’t rely on atmospheric pressure to provide my altitude reading, but instead on a collection of multi-million-dollar satellites!
