Installing Asterisk On Synology Ds212j Specification

I'm in the market for an entry level NAS, and it's between a second hand DS213j and a first hand DS215j. The main difference I'm seeing in the datasheet () is the move from a single core 1.2GHz (DS213j) to a dual core 800MHz (DS215j). Would there be a noticeable impact on performance between the two? Which would you recommend getting (assuming second hand DS213j is slightly cheaper)?

I'm not familiar with clock speed VS number of core comparisons, and is 1.2GHz drop to 800MHz (dual core) a lot? I've never had a NAS so I'm not sure what I'd use it for beyond data backup/faux cloud storage. I'm sure I'll find uses in time. As an offshoot, any idea why the DS215j is priced so cheap? The DS213J retails for £160, while the DS215j retails for £138. Not sure what's going on.

A single core ARM CPU is the brains of the DS212j and despite its low computing power it will be enough, since this NAS doesn't support demanding RAID levels like RAID 5 or 6. Also the low frequency CPU will need less power leading to higher power saving, something important in NAS servers which usually work 24/7.

Keep in mind that there is no release date announced for ds215j yet. You may be waiting a couple months to get the unit. I owned ds212j and ds213j, which both had single core Marvell CPUs of various speed. The CPU made no difference in read or write speed at all in my experience. Those marketing numbers are ideal situations. In the real world with network congestion (or wifi) you won't hit them anyway. Having said that DS213j is great data hosting and cloud storage.

The only thing that it can't do to save its life is generate thumbnails out of photos. If you want to index a collection of a few thousand photos for use with PhotoStation it will take literally several weeks at 100 CPU utilisation.

I don't expect that DS215j is going to change that as the new CPU doesn't have support for hardware accelerated transcoding either. If Synology ever moves the J line to use Intel Atoms - that will make a big difference. One advantage that nobody mentioned is that DS215j has a USB 3.0 port while DS213j is only USB 2.0. This will make a difference if you plan to back its data up to an external drive. I just use Amazon Glacier cloud backup. Synology OS comes with built in support for it and it costs less than $2 / month for me.
